Associate Dean for Equity, Inclusion, Diversity and Faculty Affairs
The College of Health and Human Development (HHD) seeks candidates for the position of Associate Dean for Equity, Inclusion, Diversity and Faculty Affairs. The successful candidate will be the inaugural holder of this position which also comes with a tenured academic/faculty appointment in the appropriate disciplinary unit within the college.

This position will report to the dean of the college and work closely with a college academic leadership team that includes the Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Programs and the Associate Dean for Undergraduate and Outreach Programs. The Associate Dean will have responsibility for two key areas within the college, leading its efforts in diversity, equity and inclusion and faculty affairs. The creation of this position recognizes that equity, inclusion and diversity across the college and in faculty affairs is fundamental and synergistic to achieving excellence in our mission.
The successful candidate will be the lead administrator in the college charged with the key responsibilities of:
- advancing access, equity, diversity, inclusion, belonging, and retention, efforts for students, staff, and faculty in the college;
- motivating and sustaining a college-wide culture that embraces individual identities, fosters a culture of inclusion and belonging, and promotes equity and equitable practices;
- assessing and promoting the impact of these efforts as reflected in policies and practices within the college, including supporting the work of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Leadership Council and the existing department and college Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committees
- working closely with college leadership, academic departments and research centers on faculty recruitment and retention planning and implementation refining, guiding and monitoring annual processes related to promotion, tenure, and annual review
- refining, guiding, and monitoring other faculty-focused processes including sabbaticals, endowed and distinguished professorships, conflict of interest disclosure, the ombudsperson function, exit interviews, etc.
- refining, guiding and monitoring initiatives and programs intended to foster faculty success, and establishing, refining, guiding and monitoring Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiatives and programs.
In achieving the above, the successful candidate will:
- serve as a member of the Dean's Academic Leadership Team
- serve as a member of the College Executive Council
- lead a team of staff focused on inclusion, equity, diversity and faculty affairs within the Dean's Office
- serve as principal administrative liaison to the HHD Faculty Organization and college administration point person on shared governance matters,
- serve as a principal administrative liaison to the Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs, Vice Provost for Educational Equity, and the Office of Affirmative Action.
As a leader in the college, the successful candidate must be able to engage effectively with faculty, staff, students, administrators, alumni, donors, and friends within and outside of the College to advance initiatives and realize goals and actions.
The position is envisioned as a 48-week full-time administrative appointment; however, qualified candidates interested in different configurations (for example, allowing for maintenance of research programs) may still apply.
- A terminal degree in one of the academic areas/disciplines within the college, with qualifications commensurate with tenure requirements at Penn State;
- Vision, commitment, and evidence of impact in advancing diversity, equity and inclusion throughout a college community;
- Demonstrated interest and experience in developing faculty as evidenced by mentoring, leadership and professionalism:
- Experience in academic leadership at some level;
- Record of success identifying and securing federal, foundation, and other sources of funding to support research, academic, or professional development programs or initiatives;
- Excellent verbal and interpersonal communication skills;
- Demonstrated ability to manage projects and to work effectively in, and lead, collaborative, multidisciplinary teams.
THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY
The Pennsylvania State University is a land-grant Research I university founded in 1855. The College of Health and Human Development (HHD)
Penn State's College of Health and Human Development is organized in eight academic units (home to eight undergraduate majors, 11 masters, and 8 doctoral programs), four research centers, and eleven central units. College operations are distributed across twelve campus buildings and two off-campus rental locations and comprise a range of office settings, laboratories, and specialized facilities. HHD's faculty include 142 tenured or tenure-line FTEs, 93 non-tenure-line teaching faculty FTEs, and 37 non-tenure line research faculty FTEs. The college has 3988 undergraduates enrolled in University Park, 1066 students enrolled in its majors at Commonwealth Campus, and 771 undergraduates enrolled in online World Campus programs. DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND INCLUSION AT PENN STATE AND HHD
In 2020, less than forty percent (36.6%) of tenured or tenure track faculty at Penn State University (all campuses, all colleges) are women and less than ten percent (9.2%) are persons from excluded ethnic and racial groups. In HHD, 49.1% of UP-based tenured or tenure track faculty are women and 8% are persons from excluded racial and ethnic groups. Slightly more than one-sixth (17.4%) of HHD's undergraduate students at the University Park and 13.4% of HHD's graduate students are from excluded ethnic and racial groups. Against this challenging background, there are indications that Penn State's commitment to inclusion is approaching a tipping point. A 2020 special Penn State Presidential Commission on Racism, Bias and Community Safety called for an “enterprise approach” to advance diversity, equity and inclusion strategies in order to consolidate and coordinate DEI functions, policies, and practices; promote clearer lines of communication; maximize effectiveness of disparate, disconnected, and often duplicated resources; standardize important procedure; and provide more visible accountability for DEI goals.
